RARE BEAT - GARAGE ROCK AND PSYCHEDELIC
RARE BIRD
Records are not for sale - For your viewing pleasure only

Rare Bird was formed at the end of 1968 by the merging of two lesser-known bands, namely Lunch and the pop-psych band Fruit Machine. They performed in Birmingham and at the famous Marquee Club, which was then the heart of the London music scene. This is where they worked on their first album "Rare Bird", which included the track "Sympathy".

Alongside The Nice and Van der Graaf Generator, they were among the very first to sign with the Charisma label, which later also housed Genesis, Lindisfarne, and other major bands. The most remarkable thing was that Rare Bird actually had no guitarist. It was the only rock band of that era without a guitarist, but with a keyboard player, drummer, and bassist instead.

When they released the song "Sympathy", none of the band members had expected its success. Had they taken advantage of the hit at the time and toured across Europe, they might have achieved greater success. But they were rather lazy and stuck to playing in their home country, England.

The band eventually disbanded in 1975. Dave Kaffinetti played the role of Viv Savage in "This Is Spinal Tap" (1984). Chris Randall joined Martin Murray and the Honeycombs.
